Norplant
Norplant
Norplant was first approved in 1990 as an implantable contraceptive drug. Since its approval nearly 1 million U.S. women have used Norplant and 2.5 million women worldwide, but the contraceptive has been controversial due to its side effects and the failure to communicate the risks of side effects to the patients. American Home Products, Norplant manufacturer, has consistently denied any error or wrongdoing yet Norplant has been involved in tens of thousands of lawsuits over the years.
Women alleged that Norplant makers failed to properly and adequately warn them about the severity of side effects they may experience, including nausea, headaches, irregular menstrual bleeding, ovarian cysts, weight gain, removal problems and depression. The first Norplant case went to trial in 1998 and the makers of Norplant agreed to offer cash settlements to over 36,000 women claiming they suffered severe side effects due to Norplant that were downplayed.
